CAREER NOTES

​

Four-year starter (2011-14) at punter . . . finished his career ranked among MSU's all-time leaders in punts (second with 268), punting yards (second with 11,307) and punting average (sixth at 42.2) . . . a valuable weapon on special teams, he placed 39 percent of his career punts inside the 20 (104-of-268) and 21 percent inside the 10 (56-of-268) . . . became the first Spartan in school history to earn Academic All-America honors four times (first team: 2013-14; second team: 2011-12) . . . became the 20th four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection in MSU history (2011-14) . . . earned first-team All-America honors from ESPN.com in 2013 and was a 2013 Ray Guy Award semifinalist . . . achieved near perfection in the academic arena, maintaining a 3.97 GPA while graduating with a major in applied engineering sciences in May 2013; will earn his master's degree in public policy.

2014 SEASON (SENIOR)

 

Named to the 2014 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Class and was one of 17 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy (nation's top scholar-athlete) . . . named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America selection for the second straight season; became the third Spartan to earn first-team Academic All-America honors twice . . . also became the first student-athlete at MSU to garner Academic All-America accolades four times . . . ranked seventh in the Big Ten in punting (41.2 avg.) . . . placed 29 percent (15-of-52) of his punts inside the 20 and eight percent inside the 10 (4-of-52) . . . punted three times in the 2015 Cotton Bowl Classic win over No. 4 Baylor (119 yards; 39.7 avg.), including one downed inside the 20 . . . averaged a season-best 46.3 yards per punt (six punts for 278 yards), including a season-long 66-yarder and two inside the 20, at Maryland . . . averaged 45.5 yards on four punts, including a 53-yarder, and placed one inside the 20 at Indiana . . . didn't punt until the third quarter at Purdue; although he only had two punts, his second punt was downed at the Purdue 5-yard line and pinned the Boilermakers 95 yards from their end zone with 2:59 remaining when they were trailing 38-31 . . . placed three of his nine punts inside the 20, including two inside the 3-yard line, against No. 19 Nebraska; averaged 38.4 yards on nine punts (346 yards) . . . averaged 43.4 yards on five punts, including three kicks downed inside the EMU 20-yard line; hit a season-long 55-yarder in the fourth quarter . . . punted six times for 256 yards (42.7 avg.) at No. 3 Oregon . . . placed two of his four punts inside the 20 in the season opener against Jacksonville State, including a game-long 45-yarder that was downed at the JSU 17.

Earned All-America honors from ESPN.com (first team), CBSSports.com (first team) and Athlon Sports (second team) . . . named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America . . . first-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches for the second-straight year . . . second-team all-conference pick by the media . . . Ray Guy Award semifinalist . . . also tabbed All-Big Ten by Athlon Sports (first team) . . . ranked fourth in the Big Ten in punting with his 42.5-yard average . . . ranked seventh in MSU single-season history with 3,233 punting yards . . . placed 43 percent of his punts (33-of-76) inside the 20 and 32 percent inside the 10 (24-of-76) . . . led the NCAA FBS with 24 punts downed inside the 10 and ranked tied for second with 33 inside the 20 . . . also had eight punts downed inside the 5, including three at the 1-yard line . . . had 16 punts of 50-plus yards . . . averaged 45.5 yards per punt, including a 55-yarder, while also placing three of his six punts inside the 20 in the 100th Rose Bowl Game against No. 5 Stanford . . . placed two of his six punts inside the 10 against Minnesota . . . pinned four of his seven punts inside the 10 in victory at Nebraska, including one that was fumbled at the 8-yard line and another that was downed at the 1; also gained 3 yards on a fake field goal that helped propel Michigan State to a touchdown scoring drive midway through the fourth quarter, giving MSU a 34-21 lead . . . placed three of his five punts inside the 20 in the win over No. 23 Michigan, including two inside the 10 . . . placed his only punt of the game at Illinois, a 54-yarder, on the Illini 8-yard line . . . dropped three of his seven punts inside the 10 against Purdue . . . named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time in his career and also named CFPA National Punter of the Week after averaging a career-best 59.2 yards on four punts in the win over Indiana, including a season-long 69-yarder in the fourth quarter; also placed one kick on the IU 4-yard line; his 59.2-yard average against the Hoosiers established a Big Ten single-game record (minimum four punts) . . . averaged 44.4 yards on five punts at Iowa, including two inside the 20 and a 51-yarder; also ran a fake punt 25 yards for a first down that helped set up Michael Geiger's 49-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter . . . averaged 41.4 yards per punt at No. 22 Notre Dame, including a 54-yarder and one downed inside the 20 . . . downed four of his seven punts inside the 20 against South Florida; totaled seven punts for 319 yards (45.6 avg.) . . . placed a career-high six punts inside the 20 in the season opener vs. Western Michigan and tied his career high with 11 punts (38.5 avg; 423 yards).

First-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and second-team pick by the media . . . became the sixth Spartan punter to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors . . . also a first-team All-Big Ten selection by ESPN.com, CollegeFootballNews.com and Phil Steele . . . named to the CollegeFootballNews.com All-Sophomore Team (honorable mention) . . . led the Big Ten and ranked 21st in the FBS, averaging 43.3 yards per punt . . . placed 39 percent of his punts inside the 20 (31-of-79) and 22 percent inside the 10 (17-of-79) . . . ranked second in the Big Ten with 31 punts downed inside the 20 . . . had 19 punts of 50-plus yards, which ranked first in the Big Ten . . . his 3,422 punting yards ranked second most in a MSU single-season . . . named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, as selected by the CoSIDA, for the second-straight year . . . was also named Academic All-Big Ten and a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for the second year in a row . . . named to ESPN.com's Big Ten All-Bowl Team after setting MSU's single-game bowl records for punts (11) and punting yards (481) in the 2012 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl against TCU. . . the 481 punting yards established a career high and were the most by a Big Ten punter in a single-game in 2012, while the 11 punts tied for second most . . . broke the bowl records he set in the 2012 Outback Bowl against Georgia (eight punts for 401 yards) . . . three of his punts against the Horned Frogs were 50-plus yards, including his long of 55 yards that was fumbled by TCU punt returner Skye Dawson at the TCU 4-yard line and was recovered by Michigan State; that play led to Le'Veon Bell's 4-yard TD run with 7:00 left in the fourth quarter that gave MSU a 14-13 lead . . . placed three punts inside the 20 against TCU, including two inside the 10 . . . two of his three punts at Minnesota traveled 50-plus yards, including a 56-yarder that was downed at the 2-yard line . . . placed two of his five punts inside the 20 vs. Northwestern while averaging 42.6 yards per punt . . . named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 46.6 yards on seven punts vs. No. 21 Nebraska, including three placed inside the 20 . . . placed three of his seven punts inside the 10 in overtime win at Wisconsin . . . averaged 41.4 yards on seven punts, including a season-high four placed inside the 20, at No. 23 Michigan; on fourth-and-9 from MSU's 23-yard line in the fourth quarter, Sadler ran a fake punt 26 yards for a Spartan first down, leading to Dan Conroy's go-ahead field goal at the 5:48 mark . . . averaged 40.2 yards on nine punts (362 yards), including a 59-yarder, vs. Iowa . . . placed three of his seven punts inside the 20 while averaging 45.6 yards per punt at Indiana . . . averaged 55.4 yards on five punts against No. 14 Ohio State, including a career-long 70-yarder in the second quarter; three of his five punts were downed inside the 20, including two inside the 10 . . . had eight punts vs. Notre Dame for 340 yards; had three downed inside the 20 . . . averaged 49.5 yards on two punts at Central Michigan, including a 56-yarder that was downed at the 8-yard line.

Sports and BTN.com Big Ten All-Freshman Team . . . selected to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America Team (second team) for his 4.0 GPA in applied engineering sciences . . . also a CoSIDA Academic All-District V first-team selection and an Academic All-Big Ten honoree . . . 2011-12 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award recipient . . . was one of 14 freshmen starting punters in the FBS (true and redshirt) . . . averaged 41.1 yards per punt (61 punts for 2,509 yards) . . . placed 41 percent (25-of-61) of his punts inside the 20 . . . tied for 12th in the FBS with 25 punts inside the 20 . . . also pinned 11 punts inside the 10, which tied for eighth most in the nation . . . had six punts of 50-plus yards . . . set season highs in punting average (50.1 yards per punt), punts (8) and punting yards (401) and placed four punts inside the 20 in Michigan State's win over No. 18 Georgia in the 2012 Outback Bowl; also had a season-long 57-yard punt against the Bulldogs . . . placed two of his three punts inside the 20 against Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game, including one at the 1-yard line . . . pinned two of his four punts inside the 20 at Northwestern and averaged 39.0 yards per punt (four punts for 156 yards) . . . named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after averaging 46.2 yards per punt (six punts for 277 yards), including three inside the opponent's 20, in Michigan State's 37-21 victory at Iowa . . . named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in MSU's 31-24 victory over Minnesota; averaged just 35.0 yards on five punts against the Gophers, but four of his five punts were placed inside the Gopher 20-yard line; delivered two clutch punts in the final seven minutes, twice pinning Minnesota inside its own 10-yard line; his first punt was downed at the Minnesota 6 and the second was fair caught by Brandon Green at the Gopher 10 . . . pinned two of his seven punts inside the 20 against Wisconsin; averaged 38.0 yards on seven punts vs. the Badgers . . . named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his performance in the Michigan game; averaged 41.0 yards per punt on five attempts, had one punt downed inside the Michigan 20-yard line, and delivered a long of 45 yards despite wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour in Spartan Stadium . . . averaged 40.8 yards on six punts at Ohio State, including three downed inside the 20 . . . averaged 43.5 yards on two punts vs. Central Michigan, including a 46-yarder . . . averaged 39.7 yards on six punts, including a 55-yarder, at Notre Dame . . . his only punt against Florida Atlantic was a 36-yarder that was downed at the FAU 8-yard line . . . in his collegiate debut against Youngstown State, averaged 38.3 yards per punt (three for 115 yards), including one inside the 20.
